Volume of medical receipts and prescriptions, author unknown

The volume has been rebound. On the front is an original label 'Medical Receipts and Prescription' and on the rear 'Receipts and Prescriptions Dr Garthshore'. It has been used for a number of purposes and is in a number of different hands. From the front the pages are numbered 1-248 and consists of prescriptions and receipts (or recipes) divided into a number of sections. These are headed: 'Draughts' (page 1); 'Julapia' (page 7); 'Powders' (page 33); 'Receipts for children' (page 34) which are continued pages 42-43; 'Prescriptions Dr Cooper contra epilepsiam pro Comite Darlington' (page 39); 'Pharmacopaeia Noscomii Divi Thomae' (pages 44-71); 'Pharmacopaeia Noscomii Thomae Guy Armiger' (pages 72-89); an entry for distemper among horned cattle published at Magdeburg (page 90); Dr Ward's Nostrums', a list of nine prescriptions which were published 1763 (pages 92-97); 'fitt water for children' (page 98); and 'Formulae Medicament Dr Hugh Smith' (pages 99-165). From page 165-248 there are no headed sections although each prescription is clearly delineated.

From the rear the pages are numbered 728-800 and consist of extracts from medical texts, including prescriptions, with a name or names which are presumably the authors. The texts are titled: 'Of the Chlorosis or green sickness' Perry (pages 728-732); 'Of a Suppression of the menses' Perry, Pitcarn (pages 744-749); 'Of floodings' Cheyne (pages 765-768); 'Of the fluor albus or whites' Cheyne, Pitcarn, Perry (pages 780-788); 'Of the Furor Uterinus' Perry; 'Of Sterility and Barrenness' Perry; 'Of Abortions and Miscarriages' Perry; 'Of a hard delivery' Pitcarn, Perry; and 'Of the prolapse of the womb and anus' Perry.

The volume is undated although some of the prescriptions are, the latest being 1778 (page 111). There is an index which starts on the front flyleaf, continues on the last page and back flyleaf and is completed on p4. The index simply lists the prescriptions by page number and is not alphabetical. It is in a different hand from the majority of the text.

William Cullen's lectures on institutions etc

The volume consists of a number of sections. In the first section (possibly not all in Cullen's writing) the headings are: 'Atonics', 'Mennorrhagia','Fluor Albus', 'Abortus', 'Amenorrhea', 'Catarrhus', 'Dystenteria'. The second section is on various treatments which include blistering, Peruvian bark, stimulants etc. The third section is headed 'Of Fevers' but may not be entirely on that subject and includes the date 3rd January 1772.The fourth section is incomplete and appears to be about the physiology of muscles and fibres. After this there are what may be proofs of the printed contents pages from the 'Institutions of Medicine' with page number annotations. In amongst these are notes which may be for the sections of the book listed. At the rear of the volume are pages in Latin which have numbered sections I-XXXII and may therefore be a lecture plan. Described in the original manuscript catalogue as 'in his own hand'.

DEP/PON/1

Student notes of William Pond from clinical lectures of John Rutherford

The book is signed on the inside front cover by William Pond with the heading beneath 'Dr Whyte's Clinical Lectures' and on the page before the index 'William Pond May 17th 1762'. According to a note by Douglass Taylor in the original manuscripts catalogue, although the volume was originally attributed to Robert Whytt, he thought it should be John Rutherford. Many of the cases and the lectures on specific conditions are the same word-for-word as those in AUA/1 which are clearly assigned to Rutherford. Pond may therefore have reused a volume he had intended to use for Whytt. However, there is a reference on p318 within a lecture 'On Worms' to 'a clinical patient of Dr Rutherfurd's' (rather than to 'a patient of mine'). This would seem to indicate that this lecture at least was not by Rutherford.

The volume consists of patient's case studies with a heading giving the condition. The lectures on specific conditions are on venereal disease, scurvy, fluor albus, headache and worms. Also included is an abstract of a lecture by Professor Alexander Monro senior 'On a Surgical Patient in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary - A Burnt Breast' which appears at p273 and again at the end after the index.

Clinical lectures [of John Rutherford]

The volume starts with an introduction followed by a heading Clinical Lectures starting at p13 and dated 14th January 1750. After lecture 2 on 29th January it is less clear that the cases are divided into lectures. Although they are still dated, the dates are not consecutive. Each case study gives a heading followed by a case study giving the patient's name, age, diagnosis and treatment. The volume also includes three lectures clearly stated as by Dr Rutherford, on Inoculation (p181), on Epilepsy (p195) and on Scrophula (p213). A further four general lectures on venereal diseases, on scurvy, on fluor albus and on headache are included at the end. There is an index at the rear which give's the patient's name and disease but no page numbers.

DEP/RJO/3/4

Clinical lectures given by Dr John Rutherford in the Royal Infirmary at Edinburgh, volume 2

The volume consists of a case note for each of the following conditions: cattarh, pleurisy, epilepsy, diarrhoea and haemoptoe (pp1-51). This is then followed by: 'Directions for Innoculating the Small Pox' by Andrew St Clair (pp52-69); 'Directions concerning Inoculation' by Dr Rutherford (pp70-71); 'Of the Venereal Disease' [pp72-106]; 'Of the Scurvy' (pp107-117); 'Of the fluor albus' (pp118-123); 'Of the Head-ach [ache]' (pp124-132); 'Of the Scrophula' (pp133-143); and 'Of the Epilepsy' (pp144-166). After the index at the rear are two treatments for piles, a recipe for cough mixture and one for tincture of squills. Although no author is given for the essays they are on the same subjects as those at RJO/3/1.

The other volumes in this series are much earlier. However, the cases are not the same as in the earlier volumes so it is not simply a later copy. It is possible that Rutherford kept lecturing until two years before he died. The student who took the notes is not known, nor is the location of volume 1.
