[Patient case book, author unknown]

Each case note is headed either with the name of the patient or their condition. The notes include prescriptions and a journal of the patient's progress. All the entries are in Latin with some titles in French and occasional use of English. Some of the patients are eminent such as Lord Conway (p23), Lord Rich (p36), Lord Beauchamp (p42), Sir Henry Wallop (p54), Lady Carr (p77) and the daughter of the Queen of Bohemia (p138). There are also a number of patients with foreign names such as Mrs Vanbrugge (p90), Mrs Vanderputt (p145), Signor Jeronymo Veneto (p151) and Madamoyselle Moncon (p244). At the rear (pp285-286) is a letter in English addressed to Her Grace concerning what she hoped was a pregnancy but the physician thought otherwise. The dates are from p251 (1633) and p230 (1642). However, as the entries are not chronological there may be earlier and later entries. Extensively indexed at the rear by condition. Nowhere is the doctor named.

The Physicians', Surgeons' and General Practitioners Visiting List, Diary, Almanack and Book of...

The volume was used by Edward Barnes to record the patient visits he made and whether they had paid. He had a system of symbols to indicate what the patient visit had entailed which he listed at the front of the diary. There was also space for general engagements; pages for obstetric and vaccination engagements; and memoranda pages used for expenses. This was found in an envelope with the diary at ANO/36 and may have been donated at the same time.
