Photograph of a child's face with the caption 'Eye showing Bitots spots. These spots usually appear equatorially over the outer quadrant of the sclerotics. Their commonest shape is sub-triangular with the base lying near the cornea-sclerotic junction. These spots resemble patches of chalk paste which have been striated with a pin'.

This is an acute condition of the eye following extreme deficiency of Vitamin A. The cornea becomes necrotic. The first sign is a white spot in the cornea which can grow rapidly'.
