Correspondence of Sir Sydney Smith

This series contains general correspondence which tends to be more personal than the correspondence found in the subject files. The items include letters of thanks and congratulation, invitations, financial matters etc. but some do also cover forensic matters. It is not clear whether the letters in this series were intended to be kept separate or whether, in some cases, letters have become separated from the appropriate subject file. Although he may have kept this correspondence alphabetically, this has been changed to a chronological arrangement. Some outgoing letters are included in the correspondence series, particularly for 1953-1954, and are all punched in the same way which indicates that they were possibly kept together in a separate ring binder system at one time. Smith's replies have been matched with incoming letters where relevant for ease of use.

Where items have been closed, this is indicated in the access fields in each entry. Correspondence is both typed and manuscript.

For correspondence concerning Smith's work in Ceylon, see SMS/7/77-83.
