| Description | Alan Drury Harling Browne was born in Dublin in 1923 to Percy and Gladys Browne. His father was a solicitor. He attended Baymount Preparatory School followed by Shrewsbury school, leaving in 1941. He studied medicine at Trinity College and qualified in 1947. He began his career as a house surgeon at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital, followed by the Rotunda Hospital which is where he gained an interest in obstetrics and gynaecology. He trained at Crumpsall Hospital in Manchester and became a member of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1950 following which he returned to the Rotunda as assistant master, a position he held from 1951 to 1954. In 1960 he became master of the Rotunda. In 1968 he became a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Royal College of Surgeons. During the 1970s he was involved in early sex education.
In 1995 he edited the book ‘Masters, Midwives and Ladies in Waiting’ which covered the prior 50 years of progress at the Rotunda. He was a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, Royal College of Physicians Ireland and Royal College of Surgeons Ireland. During his retirement he became involved in creating a catalogue of books relating to obstetrics and gynaecology that predated the 20th century at both the Royal Colleges in Ireland.
He married Pamela in 1952 and they had four sons and seven grandchildren. He died in 2010.
