Description Of Item | The diary commences at Lerwick, Shetland and describes a voyage in the ship Diana to the Arctic at Spitsbergen to hunt seals. Foulis acted as the surgeon and naturalist. Foulis has also used the volume for notes from [Quam's?] Anatomy 7th edition on the reproductive organs and particularly the ovary. At the front of the volume is a sketch of Gullane House and at the back a sketch of two faces and throughout the volume a hunchback whale, a molly and the dinner table in the cabin. Also includes is a printed photograph of a dead whale in a harbour captioned by his daughter Lillian 'Papa cutting up a whale'. The front flyleaf is inscribed 'Sunday 2nd July - Mr Lamont today predicts that at Spitsbergen we should get as sport: 46 large seals, 4 small seals, 1 white fish, 2 white bears and 16 walruses'. |
