TitlePress cutting on gluttony
Date[mid 19th century]
Description Of ItemPress cutting detailing two notable cases of bulimy (also known as bulima), both from Paris. This cutting is from the collection of Thomas Laycock. The first example is a stone-digger who was ‘aggravated by hunger’ and took his own life as a result. Another is a woman, named Annie Denise, who similarly suffered. She was admitted into Salpêtrière [Pitié- Salpêtrière University Hospital] and placed under treatment of Doctors [Jean-Etienne Dominique] Esquirol and [Jean Zuléma] Amussat, though this treatment wasn’t successful. Describes how she would gather grass and flowers to eat, and notes that she would drink brandy to attempt to relieve the colics caused by this diet.
