He was a member of a pioneering team at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary working on the development of insulin as a treatment for diabetes, being in charge of the clinical research, diets and psychological observations. It was there, in 1924, that the first UK diabetic outpatient department was started, and a later Report stated that it was to Dr Lyon 'should go the credit for the development and scope of the Dietetic Department as it is today.'
