TitleCorrespondence of the Medical Provident Institution of Scotland: Letters from William Weir, Glasgow
Date8 Jun 1826 - 12 Mar 1833
Description Of ItemAddressed to James Cleghorn and David Cannan. He writes to ask for more details of the proposals and the table of rates of the Edinburgh scheme as he was on a committee appointed by the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow to look into a similar scheme, 8th June; to announce that the Glasgow scheme was defeated in a vote so Glasgow medical men would be free to join the Edinburgh scheme, 5th September; to suggest that a meeting for nominating Directors of the Medical Provident Institution in Glasgow should be done by an existing director in Edinburgh and not someone in Glasgow, that he has got some prominent medical men, whom he lists, to lend their names as temporary directors following the method used in Edinburgh, and the problem of appointing an agent and suggesting himself or Mr Montgomery if a medical man is suitable, 6th November; his surprise that no one has visited Glasgow to recruit members, pointing out that for the policy to expire if no payment is received for a month has been objected to and wondering if a policy of insurance is legally necessary as most friendly societies do not have it, 15th November; to agree with a change in rules to make the Institution more secure, 10th June; to support the use of the new Friendly Society Act and the introduction of life assurance, 29th May; to make a claim, 25th August; to give up his claim even though he had not been told that the Institution had ceased, 12th December; to comment on the statement of affairs sent to him and question the small dividend to members, 22nd December; and to give James Crighton a mandate to sign the dissolution documents, 6th March.

In a letter addressed to Edward Allison he queries the amount of the premiums as too high, 15th November
