Description Of ItemPlated, foreign, 1 cup 6 five eighths inch high, 6 one quarter inch bowl, round, grape & vine leaf pierced base and stem, 2 pierced handles, engraved ‘Professor J Y [James Young] Simpson, MD, 1849’. 2 dishes each 10 inch diameter, 6 and a half inch high, heavily chased vine leaf and grades on base and stem, vine leaf and grape top pierced. 8 plates approximately 8 inch by 8 inch heavily chased vine leaf with bunch of grapes handles. 3 spoons chased vine leaf.

The cup is inscribed ‘Professor J.Y. Simpson, M.D. Edinburgh ‘I was sick and ye visited me' New York 1849. Julia Badell’.

All contained in a fitted wooden box with ‘Miss Eve Blantyre Simpson' on an old label. It is not known how it came into the possession of the College but it seems likely that this gift from a grateful patient passed to his daughter who later gave or bequeathed it to the College. There is some doubt whether the cup is part of the dessert service or a separate item.
