Originating in China and India, it is said that the first European account of this vegetable was in the notes of Marco Polo. Although propagated in the British Isles by the 19th century, the types of rhubarb were often referred to by geographic region. It was prescribed as a purgative and considered gentler than many other herbal remedies of the time. In its powdered form, it was used as an ingredient in medicines for constipation such as Gregory’s Powder. The famous 17th century author and apothecary Nicholas Culpeper described rhubarb as also being beneficial for the liver. |
