| Description Of Item | Colour illustration of an ulceration of the left parietal bone secondary to an abscess. The 16-year-old patient suffered from strumous abscesses occurring on the limbs, then a chronic abscess that appeared on the head. When opened, ‘solid pultaceous matter’ was removed, revealing the parietal bone to be diseases and perforated through to the dura mater. Three ulcerated points were found under the bone, on the dura mater, but the dura mater was not perforated. The patient died ‘chiefly from Erysipelas affecting the other side of his head and the fever which accompanied it.’ The patient was treated and died at the Royal Infirmary [of Edinburgh]. Illustration has a label noting ‘perforation through bone.’ The skin is held with needles. |
