| Description | Austin joined the Incorporation of Surgeons in 1749 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1762. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763 a large number of sick and injured soldiers presented themselves to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. In the same year Austin was appointed to visit and report on the military wards.
