| Description Of Item | Volume is library reference S10.22.
The volume contains nearly sixty handwritten medical recipes and other miscellaneous notes. Handwriting styles vary, and seem to range from the mid-seventeenth century to the late eighteenth century. It was published in London in 1650, but the rest of its history is partly unknown until Andrew Carothers donated it to the College in July 2024. The book had been in his mother’s family for a long time, as evidence by her maiden name, ‘Bagnall’, being written in multiple places alongside dates. Thomas Bagnall wrote his name in marginalia, and James Bagnall wrote his several times in the text block, including the title page, followed by the dates of 1743-4, 1745, 1739. Repeated signatures clearly display the book’s ownership and the importance attached to it. Another name can be found under a few recipes, in an earlier script: ‘John Maerewall’. This suggests changes in ownership. |
