Description | Balfour was born in 1873 in Edinburgh, Scotland the son of George William Balfour (see collection ref: BGW) He graduated MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1895. After graduating he worked as House Surgeon in the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh and Resident Physician and Surgeon Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. He then went to South Africa where amongst other things he was a Captain in the Transvaal Medical Staff Corps and Medical Officer to Rand Mines (Cleveland District).
