Description Of Item | The letters are concerned with an issue of mathematical plagiarism between the authors. The authors, however, are probably not as given. An explanation by an unknown author on the flyleaf states that the first printed letter is probably by William Cockburn or John Keill and was printed in London, England, not Edinburgh, Scotland as appears in the volume. The second printed letter is by Thomas Bower and was printed in Edinburgh, Scotland, not London, England as appears in the volume. There is a two-page handwritten letter dated 6th February 1710 at Aberdeen from Thomas Bower to Dr Archibald Pitcairn inserted after p16 of the second printed letter. There is an unsigned two-page handwritten letter at the rear of the volume dated 3rd March 1710 at Edinburgh, Scotland, in a different hand from the Bower letter. |
