TitleLetter from Jas [James] Anderson, Cotfield to William Cullen
Date8 Nov 1786
Description Of ItemHe sends a specimen of brassica apiifolia. He also asks whether Cullen could ask his acquaintances about the Academy at Manchester as there is a vacancy in mathematics and natural philosophy. Although he would 'disrelish the teaching the elementary parts of mathematics...I presume the thing they most want is the principles of mechanics'. He suggests making models of the most important machines. He would also be interested in teaching chemistry although 'Dr Henry is mentioned for that class'. 'Both these, in a large manufacturing place, I concur to be of the greatest utility and might be so conducted as to be in my opinion both interesting and entertaining'. He suggests that Cullen could mention his recent essay on quicklime published in the Essays on Agriculture. In index.
