TitleLetter from Robert Jackson, Edinburgh, Scotland to William Cullen
Date10 Dec 1785
Description Of ItemHe has recently read Dr Balfour's treatise on the influence of the moon on the fevers of India and had done similar research in Savannah [Savanna] La Mar, Jamaica [West Indies] on soldiers although with very different results. Before going to the Jamaica [West Indies] he had read Dr James Lind's dissertation on the putrid remitting fevers of Bengal in which he had also noticed the affects of the phases of the moon. Jackson found that of 30 cases of fever, 28 had occurred in the seven days before a new or full moon. He also conducted research in New York [United States of America]. Balfour observed fevers coming on only in the three days prior to or after a new or full moon and they also differed on the most common day for the fever to lift.
