| Description Of Item | From the collection of Thomas Dewar. The scales are in a small wooden box and consist of hand-held brass scales and six brass weights stamped with a half, 1 and 2 scruples; and half, 1 and 2 drachms. There are also seven weights for half, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 grains.
A label on the inside of the box reads 'These scale given by me to T W Dewar MD, FRCPE are intimately connected with 1745. They came into our Possession through the immediate successors of that Laird of Gask who sheltered Scotland's heir and whose daughter Lady Nairn mentioned the circumstance when so touchingly describing her birth place 'The Auld Hoose' CBY [Christian Blair Young]'. The 'our' refers to Christian Blair Young's family and the immediate successors are Carolina Oliphant (Lady Nairn) 1766-1845 and her nephew James Blair Oliphant Laird of Gask 1804-1847.
A label on the outside of the box reads 'This Apothecary's Balance which once formed part of the belongings of Prince Charles Edward Stuart was presented to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh along with a document recording its history on May 2nd 1922 by Thomas W Dewar'. |
