| Description Of Item | Press cutting reporting on a research paper read by the French naturalist M Georges Pouchet ‘on the mechanism of the changes of colour in fishes and crustacea’. The year 1872 is written in pencil in the margin. The short article introduces Pouchet’s observation that ‘fishes often change in colour according to the colour of the objects by which they are surrounded’. Through experimentation Pouchet concluded that ‘change of colour is dependent upon impressions received by the nervous system through the organs of vision’.
