Description Of ItemPages 9 to 12 from the Canada Lancet, published 15 April 1863. Article titled ‘On Large Doses of Digitalis’ by William Edward Bowman, at that time Editor of the journal. Explains that little is known about the specificities of the use of digitalis (or foxglove) but that previous experiences have shown that even large doses can be beneficial in certain cases. Uses two cases with delirium tremens he personally attended and cured with the tincture. Mentions the successful use of digitalis in epilepsy cases, notably by wise women (‘fairy women’, ‘charmed women’) in Ireland who were imitated by male medical practitioners. Notes that only a few cases of death have been reported.
