| Description Of Item | Press cutting of page 288 from the Medical Times and Gazette, originally published on 2 September 1871. Continuation of the article of DEP/LAT/1/42/9, which reports a communication made by Théophile Roussel to the [French] Academy of Medicine. Alcoholism was seemingly one of the most pressing matters ‘occupying public attention in France. The article continues by commenting on a paper read at the Academy by [Jules] Lunier, on 22 August, ‘in which he considers the part which alcoholic drinks have played in the increase of the number of cases of insanity’. He examines the differences in alcoholic beverages consumed and in spirits and wine production between different regions (especially in the North and North-East of France). He concludes that indeed, ‘alcoholism plays a very preponderant part in the increase of the number of cases of insanity’ and that is constitutes ‘a serious danger for society’.
