TitleArticle about Greyfriars Bobby from the Scotsman newspaper
Date4 Jul 1867
Description Of ItemPress cutting from the Scotsman newspaper. An account of the Edinburgh story of Greyfriars Bobby, titled ‘Strange Story of a Dog.’ The article provides an account of the dog known as Bobby who had come to reside at the grave of its owner in Greyfriars churchyard after the man’s death. Fed and cared for by several local business owners, the Burgh court sought to receive payment of the ‘dog tax’ from one of these caregivers. However, it was argued that the dog belonged to no one person and so should not be subject to the tax, despite one local offering to pay the tax to ensure that Bobby would not be removed from the church yard by the council.

From the collection of Thomas Laycock.
