TitlePress cutting about an application to discharge a prisoner
Date[mid 19th century]
Description Of ItemPress cutting on an application to discharge a prisoner, from the collection of Thomas Laycock. Thirteen-year-old Daniel Rumacher was charged with stealing money from Joseph Foot. When taken into custody Rumacher admitted to the theft but afterwards retracted his statement. The cutting details a phenomenon in which prisoners, when charged, are often frightened and admit to crimes they did not commit – which is often used against them as evidence.
