Description Of ItemJournal cutting from the collection of Thomas Laycock on a case of delirium tremens – written by Surgeon-Major William Collis at The Buffs’ [the Royal East Kent Regiment] hospital. Details how an anonymous patient, aged 34, had unusual symptoms in which they were barking like a dog, especially if spoken to. They had hallucinations of dogs in the ward and an intense dread of fluid. As treatment, Collis noted he gave the patient chloral hydrate and applied ice to his spine. To cure the patient’s headache, Collins also prescribed twelve leeches to his temples and a laxative. To aid pains in the patient’s back, Collins ordered shampooing over his spine and belladonna to be applied.
