Description Of ItemReprinted article titled ‘Kleptomania’, detailing items found in the possession of a patient at the Crichton Royal Institution for Lunatics in Dumfries. Article was originally published across two issues of The New Moon, 103-4, from 3 June 1853 and 4 July 1853.
The New Moon, first published in December 1844, was the first magazine in Scotland contributed to and produced by patients of a psychiatric hospital (The Crichton Royal Institution). From September 1852, The New Moon is stated as being ‘Printed at the Crichton Press by W. Shields’ – Shields was a former patient of the Crichton, admitted in 1851 and discharged the following year. This reprint was also printed at the Crichton Press by Shields, but the publication in which it appeared is unknown.
