| Description Of Item | Case study presented by William Roberts MD, physician to the Manchester Royal Infirmary, in the Dublin Medical Press. Relates to 8-year-old WL, admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary on 14 March 1859 with atrophy of the muscles of his left upper arm, then re-admitted on 13 February 1860 due to progression of the condition to his left lower limbs, neck and spine. Roberts details the successful treatment of this patient with ‘cod-liver oil with the syrup of the iodide of iron’ and subjection to a ‘thorough stimulation with the secondary galvanic current passed through the affected muscles’.
