| Description Of Item | Patient case note from the collection of Thomas Laycock. Relates to 40-year-old James Edward, admitted to the [Edinburgh] Royal Infirmary under the care of Laycock on 21 July 1862. Note details patient history, results of physical examinations, symptoms – including sudden-onset pain in the spine/back, limb paralysis, ‘gangrenous spots’ on his feet, and swelling of the penis – and prescribed treatments, including tinctures of [illegible] with dilute phosphoric acid, and gallic acid. Note also details how patient was sent to the ward of Dr [William Rutherford] Sanders on either 31 July or 1 August due to the clinical wards being closed. Patient died on 27 August. Post-mortem examination notes included. One part of notes in form of small booklet on white paper, with a continuation of the notes on a single sheet of blue paper. |
