Details cases in which this has proved significant – including the case of George Victor Townley, who was sentenced as guilty and set to be hung for the murder of a young lady. However, the judge – hearing the opinions of several practitioners – found him not of sound mind and he was sent to Bethlehem Hospital, London. The practitioner there found him of sound mind and he was sent to penal servitude for life.
