| Description Of Item | Press cutting on the actions of female convicts from the book ‘Memoirs of Millband and Chapters in Prison History’ by Captain Arthur Griffiths, Deputy-Governor of Millbank Prison. This cutting is from the collection of Thomas Laycock. Details troubles caused by female convicts (‘the worst to deal with’) including how they would drum on the doors with the soles of their feet. Notes how they did not stop even if ‘soaked in perspiration from head to foot, and lying…in pools of moisture’. The kicking of the doors resulted in diseases of the feet, the skin of the sole being worn away and the women did not stop until they had ‘fairly worn themselves out’. The successful escape of male convict Punch Howard is also mentioned. |
