TitlePress cutting on an explosion near the Zoological Gardens, London
Date[mid 19th century]
Description Of ItemPress cutting regarding an explosion of a boat near the Zoological Gardens in London. Mr [Abraham Dee] Bartlett, the superintendent of the Zoological Gardens, is mentioned to have survived the explosion. The animals in the zoo survived. The lions, tigers, hyenas, wolves, bears, and leopards were ‘unmoved’ by the sound. By contrast, nearly all the herbivorous animals (giraffes, giant deer, elephants, rhinoceros, hippopotami) ‘were in a condition of the greatest terror’. The monkeys are described as chattering uneasily. This cutting is from the collection of Thomas Laycock.
