| Description | The Medical Provident Institution of Scotland was formed as a friendly association of the medical profession throughout Scotland to provide benefits to members in sickness and old age, and for widows and families after their death, with members paying an annual premium. The plan was proposed by Dr Alison, and Dr Poole sent a circular to members of the profession on 18th August 1826 signed by fifteen prominent members. The original committee, named on 23rd Augsut 1826, consisted of Professor Jamieson, Dr Yule, Dr Morrison, Dr Beilby, Dr Gairdner, Dr Milligan, Dr Wood, Dr Poole, Dr Greville, Mr Lizars, Dr Campbell, Mr White, Dr Grane, Dr Spens, Dr Borthwick, Dr Millar, Dr Graham and Mr Allison. It was proposed to allow non-professional members on 23rd May 1827 and on 2nd June 1830 it was acknowledged that the scheme had not received the support that had been anticipated. Finally at a meeting on 27th December 1832 it was decided to dissolve the Institution. There were subsequent meetings but these were concerned with the division of the Institution's funds.
