After active service in the Royal Army Medical Corps he was transferred to the War Office's medical research unit where he became an accomplished medical statistician. In 1946 he returned to Leeds as a research fellow in the Department of Medicine and worked on the endocrine aspect of diabetes. He was not able to find a specialist post in diabetes so retrained as a general and geriatric physician. He obtained consultancies in both fields at Preston Hospital, North Shields, retiring in 1977.
