| Description | The Scottish Asylums Pathological Scheme was established in 1897 as a unitary laboratory for all the Scottish asylums, headed by pathologist previously at the Royal Edinburgh Asylum, Dr W Ford Robertson. The first premises were at 12 Bristo Place, Edinburgh in the same building as the laboratory of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. The main aims of the Scheme were to place the study of neurological samples sent from the asylums on a more scientific footing, to conduct and encourage research, to provide slides for clinical use and to train medical officers of individual asylums in pathological methods. The Scheme was dissolved in 1948 with the establishment of the National Health Service, although the cash book post-dates its dissolution.
