Description Of Item | The forms were issued by the Scottish Medical Service Emergency Committee. Where a practitioner, although willing to serve if arrangements could be made for his practice, doubted whether this would be possible; or, where anybody or institution with an interest in his civil work wished to postpone his enlistment, they could apply to the Committee in its tribunal function. The Committee issued its decision in a letter of excuse. Currie, in 'The Mustering of Medical Service in Scotland', (p63) states that only 38 such applications were received. However, there are 66 forms in this series, numbered consecutively, and the volume of letters of excuse at SMC/3/4/4/3 shows that 48 were possibly issued.
The form gives the name and address of the applicant; body to which notice given of application (eg Local War Committee); name of the practitioner for whom the application is being made; their age and qualifications; reasons for application; and documents in support of the application. |
