| Description | Ralph Stockman (1861-1946) was Professor of Materia Medica at University of Glasgow from 1897 to 1937, and a leading authority in the field of pharmacology. He was awarded an LLD [Legum Doctor] in 1937 and the Stockman Medal is named for him.
Born in Leith, Stockman graduated MB from the University of Edinburgh in 1882. He studied at Vienna and Strasbourg before returning to lecture and conduct research at the University of Edinburgh, which awarded him an MD. After coming to Glasgow, Stockman was visiting physician at the Western Infirmary. He continued his meticulous research in a number of medical fields, establishing his reputation primarily as a pharmacologist and most notably for his investigations into the aetiology and treatment of iron-deficiency anaemia.
In 1935, as Senior Professor, Stockman chaired the Senate when the Principal Sir Robert Sangster Rait fell ill.
