DescriptionThe Society was founded in 1921 and was known as the Tuberculosis Society of Scotland until 1963. Its first meeting was in the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and Sir Robert Philip, Senior Physician at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Royal Victoria Consumption Hospital was the President until 1933. When the prevalence of tuberculosis declined, the Society broadened its interests to include all aspects of respiratory medicine and the name was changed to the Scottish Thoracic Society in 1961.
