DescriptionUnderhill was born in Tipton, Staffordshire on March 8th 1845. He attended University of Cambridge where he studied medicine, graduating in 1870. During 1869-70 he was one of the Presidents of the Royal Medical Society and a demonstrator of anatomy at the University of Edinburgh. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1872 and of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1876.

He inherited the large obstetrical practice of Dr Matthews Duncan after the latter moved to London in 1875. He also became physician to the Royal Maternity and Simpson Memorial Hospital; a lecturer on midwifery and the diseases of women and children in the Extra Academical School of Edinburgh; and an examiner in midwifery to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. At the time of his death he was also consulting physician to the Royal Edinburgh Hospital for Sick Children.

In December 1906, Underhill was unanimously elected President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and his term of office was renewed in 1907. He died on April 24th 1908.
