| Description Of Item | Drawing is 30cm x 45cm, pen, brown ink and wash. Originally this drawing was thought to be by Michelangelo. On the back of the frame is written: ‘Drawing by Michel Angelo bought at the sale of Professor Munro’s pictures. J Matthews Duncan. April 1867.’ This refers to Alexander Monro tertius, who was a professor of anatomy at Edinburgh University. Dr Matthews Duncan was a Fellow of the College. In 1946, Berenson ascribed its companion drawing at the National Gallery of Scotland to Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540). Keith Andrews in 1986 wrote that he believed the drawings were closer to the time and spirit of Alessandro Allori (1535-1607). There is a small pencil sketch of a reclined figure to the right of the central drawing.
