Presented in 1928, in memory of their late father by the family of Dr Matthews Duncan, Fellow 1857/90, it is not known how it originally came into the possession of Dr Duncan.

Dr Matthews Duncan was an obstetrician. At the age of 20 he was one of the three doctors, including James Young Simpson, who trialled chloroform at 52 Queen Street in November 1847.
