Niall Finlayson was born in British Guiana, attended Loretto School, Edinburgh, and graduated from the medical school at Edinburgh University in 1964. After junior hospital posts at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary he became, successively, a Medical Research Council research fellow and a lecturer in the Department of Therapeutics at Edinburgh. From 1969 to 1972 he worked in New York, first as a fellow in gastroenterology and then as assistant professor of medicine at New York Hospital – Cornell Medical College.
In 1973 Finlayson was appointed consultant physician at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary (ERI). His special interest was in gastroenterology, with particular regard to liver disease, and in this field he made important contributions to the research literature. The Liver Transplant Unit at ERI owed much to his care of patients, pre- and post-operatively.
