John Moir was born in a French fortress at Verdun, the son of a Naval Surgeon. His parents were taken prisoners during the Napoleonic War. In an exchange of prisoners in 1814, Dr Moir, senior, came to Edinburgh with his wife and family where he set up practice with a special interest in obstetrics. John Moir graduated with a MD in 1827 and became a Fellow of the College 10 years later. He specialised in midwifery and was on the staff of the maternity hospital teaching students and nurses.
John Moir continued as a physician to the maternity hospital for many years and on his resignation joined the Board of Directors. From his student days onwards he was connected with the maternity hospital for 74 years. He served as President of the Obstetrical Society, President of the Medico-Chirurgical Society and was appointed President of the College in 1867.
