Description Of Item | Oil on canvas, 110 x 90 cm
Robert Orde was the eldest son of John Orde, under-sheriff of Newcastle upon Tyne. He moved to Edinburgh and later engaged Robert Adam to design 8 Queen Street, one of the earliest houses in Edinburgh New Town.
His daughter Elizabeth married Robert MacQueen, Lord Braxfield, a well known Scottish law lord. He entertained in this house such notables of Edinburgh society as Braxfield and David Hume. Dr John Gregory (father of Dr James Gregory whose portrait hangs in the Hall of the College and after whom the Gregory Room is named) was the Orde's family physician.
