Born in Kells in 1915, County Meath and graduating in medicine from Trinity College, University of Dublin in 1937, John Strong received his schooling at Monkton Combe School, Bath. He joined the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1939 and served throughout the Second World War mainly in India and Burma as a medical specialist.

He was awarded an MBE(Mil) and mentioned in dispatches. His association with the Department of Medicine at Edinburgh began in 1946 and he was appointment to a personal chair in medicine in 1966. He was an honorary consultant physician to the Western General Hospital Edinburgh and helped to establish its reputation as a first-class teaching hospital with an international research reputation. His clinical interest was in endocrinology and metabolic diseases. With Dr Pat Jacobs he was first to describe the genetic fault in Klinefelter's Syndrome.
