Born in Edinburgh, John Taylor was the son of one of the earliest medical missionaries of the Church of England to India. He was educated at Edinburgh's High School and Edinburgh University, where he graduated in 1830.
Dr Taylor was the last pupil to receive instruction from Dr John Abercrombie. Following a president appointment in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, he made a protracted stay in Paris and Heidelberg, attending classes and visiting hospitals. On his return to Edinburgh he started general practice and was elected a Fellow of the College in 1847. Two years later he was made Treasurer, an office held until his death at the age of 51.
