Educated at Perth Academy, 'Tony' Toft graduated with a MB ChB from Edinburgh in 1969. After junior hospital posts in Edinburgh and experience of general practice in Islay and Orkney he was appointed a Ciba Research Fellow in endocrinology from 1971 to 1972.
There followed a series of appointments at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in general medicine, endocrinology and diabetes. In 1978 he became a consultant physician there and senior lecturer in the Department of Medicine. In his speciality, he became internationally known for his work on thyroid disease. He was appointed physician to the Queen in Scotland in 1996 and was a member of the General Medical Council from 1999 to 2003. He became Chief Medical Advisor to the Scottish Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1989 and was elected to the presidency of the British Thyroid Association from 1997 to 1999. He was the Harveian Society President and orator in 2004.
