James VI (1566–1625), son of Mary Queen of Scots and Lord Darnley, was born in Edinburgh Castle. On the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, he succeeded to the throne of England and reigned over Great Britain until 1625, when he died.
In 1621, he granted a Warrant to Dr George Sibbald, uncle of Sir Robert Sibbald, directing the Commissioners and Estates of Parliament then sitting in Scotland, to take the necessary steps to establish a College of Physicians in Edinburgh, in order to examine those who proposed to practise medicine. Owing to the opposition from the Town Council, the University, the Clergy and the College of Surgeons, the petition was not presented until 1681, during the reign of Charles II.
