DescriptionDethick entered as a student of medicine at Edinburgh University on 12th October 1812. He was a student of chemistry and pharmacy under Professor Thomas Charles Hope and of anatomy and surgery under Alexander Monro. On 21st June 1813 he was made hospital assistant to the Forces. He was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the 20th (13th?) Regiment of Dragoons on 20th July 1815. He served in the Peninsular Campaign and at the seige of New Orleans. He set up a practice in Worksop, Nottinghamshire where the Duke of Newcastle was amongst his patients.
