TitleCollection of the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society
DescriptionThe society was established in 1840 by local practitioners with the intention of increasing the status of obstetrics within medical practice. The Edinburgh Obstetrical Society, and its earlier counterparts in London and Dublin, helped improve the position of obstetrical and gynaecological practice and investigation. James Young Simpson was President 1841-1858. The Society granted qualified female practitioners membership in 1893, one of the first Scottish medical societies to do so. The Society is extant.
