DescriptionHall was born in Nottingham in 1816. After medical training he became house surgeon at St George's Hospital. About 1848 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and settled in Sheffield. He eventually taught in the School of Medicine and was elected physician to the Dispensary. From the time of his appointment in 1854 he campaigned to have a hospital attached to the Dispensary and in 1858 he succeeded, living to see the hospital grow to over 100 beds in 1872. He also campaigned for the recognition of the industrial diseases suffered by the workmen of Sheffield and gave evidence to a Royal Commission. He died in 1876.
